ABOUT THE UiTM FACULTY OF MUSIC - TOYOTA BAMBOO SOUND ARTS PROJECT
The bamboo sounds project is a research project with the purpose of creating, preserving and conserving Malaysian music instruments through (music) composition, performance and education. There are two components of the project. First, creating sound arts from bamboo (involving experimentations with bamboo length, width/diameter, thickness, texture, timbre, moisture content, age, amplification, combination with other materials etc to produce a variety of rhythmic and melodic sounds. The results of this component of the project would be the creation of new musical instruments using bamboo as one of the materials and the “Booloh” ensemble. The second component of this project is the preservation and conservation of Malaysian music heritage through the preservation and innovation of rare, existing Malaysian bamboo instruments such as the Kecapi, Anak Kumbang, Bungkau etc.
Findings and activities of this project will impact the UiTM Faculty of Music Diploma and Degree Malaysian Music/Malaysian Traditional Music/Malaysian Music Ensemble/ Principal Study (traditional instrument major), methods, technology, education, composition and entrepreneurship courses; lead to the introduction of new courses such as Instrument Making, Organology, Maintenance and Repair of Instruments, etc as well as the creation of a new program - Bachelor of Music (Malaysian Traditional Music (Hons)).
Among the impacts of the project would be to the industry (innovative product for local/ international markets), community (generating income of rural communities, creating jobs, improving quality of life, appreciation for the sound arts), online/offline marketing (increasing accessibility of instruments, global reach of Malaysian musical instruments), entrepreneurs (creating new business opportunities, increasing business ownership and ASEAN (intercultural collaborations in research, projects, arts conservation/preservation, education).
This project is fully funded by TOYOTA UMW and funds for this project would go to setting up the Centre for Bamboo Sound Arts, field work in identifying suitable bamboos and experimenting with different types of bamboos (RM10,000), creating instrument prototype/s (RM70,000), refinement of instrument/s (RM70,000), activities of composing, performing, educating to various communities and age groups (RM70,000), and marketing and commercialization (RM30,000)
